Phase Equilibria in Fe-Nd-B and Related Systems and Microstructure of Sintered Fe-Nd-B Magnets

  • Chapter
Concerted European Action on Magnets (CEAM)

Abstract

Phase relations in the systems Fe-Nd, Fe-Nd-B, Fe-Nd-O, Fe-Dy-B, Fe-Tb-B and Fe-Nd-Dy(Tb)-B were investigated. The knowledge of these phase relations is used for a better understanding and an enhancement of the microstructure of the Fe-Nd-B-based sintered magnets. The important microstructural parameters: phase distribution, grain-size distribution, contiguity, porosity and microstructure of the intergranular regions and their influence on the coercivity were investigated. The effect of additions like Al and oxides (e.g. A1203) was determined. Al stabilizes an additional phase and improves the wetting behaviour between the Nd-rich liquid and Φ.
