Dynamic and Impact Behaviour of Composite Plates

  • Chapter
Composite Structures 5

Abstract

An experimental analysis of dynamic and impact tests applied on composite laminated plates using polymer matrices and glass fibres is presented. For each plate for different conditions of loading (energy level, side and geometry of impactor) and for different dynamic conditions of targets (viscoelastic, orthotopic properties: edges conditions; damage…), the relationships between load and deflection can be drawn by using accelerometers, optical methods for measuring the force and the displacements. This allows analysis of failure modes and crack propagation. The vibration and indentation tests are necessary to understand well the impact behaviour of composite plates. A method of predicting the dynamic and impact behaviour of composite plates is proposed. It must be noted that the impact response of composite structures depends on their mechanical properties, especially edge conditions and viscoelasticity. A good agreement between experimental data and theoretical values is obtained.
