Measurement of volume Changes During Torsion of Unplasticized PVC by Means of a Torsional Dilatometer: Physical Aging Behaviour

  • Chapter
Integration of Fundamental Polymer Science and Technology—3

Abstract

A new dilatometer has been constructed which, during torsion, allows the simultaneous measurement o f shear deformation, twisting moment and volume variation. This apparatus has been utilized principally for the study of volume changes during deformation of unplasticized PVC near ambient temperature. Complex volume changes have been observed: with increasing twist angle, volume first decreased, reached a minimum value and eventually increased again, for sufficient strain levels. In the latter case, after coming back to zero strain, net volume increase and subsequent recovery have been observed. This behaviour has been interpreted in terms of deformation induced rejuvenation, followed by physical aging.
