Abstract
It seems to be important for the synthesis of discotic liquid crystalline polymers to find simple and clear synthetic pathways for related monomers.
In the course of our work, we found that the reaction of 3, 4, 5-tris (alkoxy) benzoic acid chloride with e.g. phloroglucin or cis, cis-phloroglucit leads to the formation of tristardiscogens, a new class of discotic liquid crystalline compounds. By means of blocking reactions selective substitutions at the central core e.g. the cyclohexane core becomes possible. The resulting compounds, possessing two hydroxy groups per molecule are liquid crystalline themselves, among them a new class of discotic associates.
The phase behaviour was examined by polarization microscopy and by means of differential scanning calorimetry.
Different substituents show a drastic influence on the liquid crystalline properties.
The formation of polymers of this intermediate compounds in the synthetic pathway to discotic polymers have been examined, their phase behaviour is discussed.
