Summary
The good solubility of amorphous PC in contrast to the high stability of crystalline PC in THF at ambient temperatures enables separation and isolation of PC-spherulites prepared by solvent induced crystallization.
The arrangement of the ordered phases in spherulitic structures is visualized by REM on the surface as well as in inner regions of broken spherulites. Less ordered structures in the sheaf-shaped inner areas can be removed with THF. Radial compactly grown lamellar sheets stabilize regions apart from the central segments and aggregated spherulites.
The physical properties of semicrystalline polymers depend on these less ordered regions. THF-treated crystalline PC shows melting proceses 30 K higher than untreated semicrystalline material.
