Abstract
Human α-fetoprotein is the major serum protein in developing fetus. It is suggested to be involved in binding and transport of fatty acids and other small molecular weight compounds. The protein is of important clinical significance because of its diagnostic value as oncofetal protein. Isolation of AFP from biological fluids is encountered by the close relatedness to albumin in many physicochemical and functional aspects. However the two proteins were found to have different properties with respect to binding to reactive dyes. On this basis an effective purification procedure for AFP from fetal material employing dye-ligand chromatography was elaborated.
