Abstract

The emergence of nephrology as a major clinical sub-speciality of internal medicine occurred during the 1960’s, coinciding with the development of dialysis and transplantation, procedures which at that time were hazardous and complicated in the highly selected patients. In the 1980’s, however, nephrologists offer a wide range of treatment modalities to virtually all patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and ‘dialysis’ encompasses several different but readily available procedures that can be easily performed by the patients themselves in almost any location (1–4).
