Abstract

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a serious disease of infancy, and although mortality due to the disease is now relatively low in developed countries, perhaps 1 million children die from this infection per year worldwide1. Improvements in living conditions and standards of hygiene have contributed greatly to reducing the incidence of the infection but effective vaccination has also had a marked effect and a continuing high level of vaccination has been shown to be necessary to prevent recrudescence of the disease in the population. Provided physicians are alert to the possibility of adult pertussis infection, the disease is found in adults2,3.
