Abstract
In the Federal Republic of Germany the role of the welfare state is currently being critically discussed. Questions of efficiency and effectiveness of welfare state services, including social work, are being readdressed. Professional requirements for dealing with delinquent behavior are documented by an investigation that reflects the attitudes and preferences of social workers in the youth welfare department with respect to the conditions and demands of their work.
