Abstract
Horizontal and vertical profiles of ozone (O3) as well as diurnal variations of O3concentrations are investigated at different forest areas in Baden-Württemberg based on continuous measurements at or near ground level. The influence of nitrogen oxides and light intensity on the ozone concentration is discussed in this paper. Ozone concentrations are depressed in the vicinity of anthropogenic emission sources like urban areas or meteorologically influenced valleys. These interrelationships are studied from aircraft measurements carried out above the river Rhine valley and the highlands of the Black Forest. At night, when no photochemical ozone production takes place, NO sources in urban areas cause an immediate ozone reduction, while ozone levels in the forests decrease only slightly. Vertical concentration gradients are determined in forest stands. At ground level inside the forest stand, the degradation of ozone is observed during night time which may be caused by NO exhalation from the soil. During sunny day hours, especially in summer, ozone is produced above the tree canopy.
