Abstract

Relations between soil chemistry, fine roots and needle loss are investigated on 90-years old Norway spruce trees at one of the main forest decline measuring stations in Hesse (Kaufunger Wald, 550 m asl.). Acid deposition causes at this site considerable soil acidity as well as wash-out of nutrients. Under these conditions spruce are developing a flat fine root system. The relative root tip frequency shows differences between damaged and undamaged trees. Even in relation to crown surface undamaged trees have far more root tips than damaged ones. This causes a high sensitivity of damaged trees towards waterstress. Furthermore the carbohydrate provision of fine roots is on the surveyed area not endangered by needle loss.
