Abstract
Arthur Burks has gained renown both as a philosopher and as a computer scientist. As a philosopher, he is known both as a Peirce scholar (Burks, 1958) and for his original investigations into meaning and induction (Burks, 1977). As a computer scientist, he is known both for his pioneering work on the stored-program concept (von Neumann, Burks and Goldstine, 1946; Burks, 1963) and for his studies of logical nets (Burks and Wright, 1953; Burks and Copi, 1956; Burks and Wang, 1957) and cellular automata (von Neumann, 1966; Burks, 1970).
