Abstract

A number of interesting problems in the mechanics of composite structures requires the determination of three-dimensional stress states in the course of analyzing failure characteristics of these advanced materials. The departure from plane strain or plane stress fields occurs naturally, for example, in the so-called boundary layer close to the free edge due to the mismatch in properties between adjacent laminae, or in the vicinity of defects that that may have the form of transverse cracks created by locally failed plies or local delaminations along material interfaces. The above regions exhibit significant stress gradients, suggesting singular-like behavior outside of the locally nonlinear or plastic zone.
