Summary
Optical studies of SN 1987A have shown that the luminosity at maximum was unusually faint; that some time after maximum the luminosity started to decline exponentially in a way which was not very different from what would have been expected if 0.07 solar masses of Ni56 had been synthesized to subsequently decay into 56Co and 56Fe; and that the corresponding amount of 56Co appears actually to have been detected spectroscopically. The identification of other products of nucleogenesis is in progress.
