Abstract
We discuss the constraints that three different class of observations can set on various model for the formation of the large scale structure of the Universe. These observations involve measurements of galaxy peculiar velocity and gravity, and the cosmic microwave background angular distribution. We use as a guide line a biased, cold dark matter scenario, and we compare it with an open, baryon dominated universe. The first model fails by a large margin in reproducing large scale, large amplitude bulk motions, while the second performs, at least in this context, much better and naturally predicts large scale flows. The magnitude of the dipole anisotropy of the galaxy distribution seems to constitute a rather weak test, unable to distinguish between models which differ for the amount of large scale power. On the contrary, the direction of this dipole provides a more sensitive and discriminant test. Finally, we discuss the large scale pattern of the cosmic microwave background and present results of Monte Carlo simulations of the microwave sky, which seem to be the only way for properly comparing theory and observations.
