Abstract

In 1985 an experiment was flown onboard the Spacelab-2 mission of the Space Shuttle to determine cosmic ray elemental abundances at high energy. First results of this investigation are presented here, which include the spectra of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si and the Fe group nuclei. In addition, the ratios of B/C and N/0 have been determined as a function of energy to provide a measure of the mean pathlength of interstellar material for these particles. The spectra of the primary nuclei are similar but show an unexpected steepness for Ne, Mg and particularly Si. The secondary to primary ratios indicate a mean pathlength decrease down to ≈1 g cm-2 above 100 GeV/amu, and do not exclude the possibility that it continues to decrease.
