Abstract

In two lectures I review the current status of the theory of first-order Fermi acceleration as applied to shockwaves in active galactic nuclei, in order to explain the observed ubiquitous sharp cutoff in the nonthermal synchrotron emission observed in hot spots, jets and compact cores. Application of the theory, developed in a series of papers (Webb et al. 1984, Pérez-Fournon 1985, Biermann and Strittmatter 1987, Klemens 1987a,b, Fritz 1987, 1988, Pérez-Fournon et al. 1988) leads a) to a prediction of high energy neutrino-emission in addition to photon emission, to physical arguments about b) shock structure and sharpness of cutoff and c) the radial dependence of the cutoff frequency in the M87 jet, and d) to a possible explanation of X-ray emission as secondary synchrotron radiation.
