Growth Modes and Metastability in Cu-Ni and Pd-Ni Compositionally Modulated Thin Films

Abstract

More than half a century has elapsed since man devoted the first efforts in preparing materials that would possess artificial periodicities in composition. In recent times, these efforts have evolved in routine work mainly due to: a) the success in preparing such metallic thin films by vapour deposition [1,2], b) the advent of preparation methods such as the molecular beam epitaxy [3], sputtering techniques [4,5] etc and c) the very interesting (often unusual and technologically promising) physical behavior [6] of systems containing a one-dimensional periodic fluctuation in the composition.
