Abstract

The ancient beliefs of the harmful effects of pericardial effusion on cardiac function have inspired an idea about the possible treatment of the effusion by aspiration of pericardial fluid. The first recommendations of this method appeared in the 17th and 18th centuries, but no data on its accomplishment are available [1].
