Abstract
Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) measurements are commonly used to assess the degree and type of alignment of ferro or ferri-magnetic particles in rocks i.e. they are used by many workers to decide whether rocks are anisotropic and if so whether the axes of the constituent particles exhibit a predominantly planar (foliated) or linear (lineated) distribution. However AMS measurements as commonly interpreted can give erroneous results both for the type and degree of alignment in that apparently isotropic samples can be anisotropic and that apparently foliated rocks can actually be lineated (and vice-versa). To obtain an unambiguous indication of the degree and type of alignment, anisotropy of magnetic remanence (AMR) methods such as those described here must be employed.
