Abstract
Based on the technique described by Allègre et al (1987) we demonstrate in this paper that sediments having isotopic characteristics similar to the sediments located near the island arc do not contribute to the genesis of Lesser Antilles volcanics. Two solutions are possible to explain the isotope results :
-
1)
very peculiar sediments exist in the source of the basalts or,
-
2)
an old lithosphere having isotope characteristics similar to the source of tholeiites from Parana and eastern USA exists beneath the Lesser Antilles.
The second conclusion is that this technique is clearly more sensitive than the two classical diagrams (207Pb/204Pb - 206Pb/204Pb, 208pb/204pb - 206pb/204pb).
