Abstract

Palaeomagnetism gives information on rigid body rotations. A simple model of rigid bodies floating on the surface of a slowly deforming continuous medium suggests that the relation between rigid body rotation and deformation is complex. Rotations about vertical axes of crustal blocks in part of the New Zealand plate-boundary zone may be controlled by both the dimensions and orientations of the crustal blocks and the 3-D geometry of the plate-boundary zone.
