The Application of Palaeomagnetism to Extensional Tectonics: A Palaeomagnetic Study of the Parker District, Basin and Range Province, Arizona

Abstract

A palaeomagnetic study of metamorphic core complexes within the Basin and Range province of North America has been started with the aim of testing various models of extensional tectonics. Here we report the first results from the Whipple-Buckskin-Rawhide Core complex situated across the Californian-Arizona boundary near Parker, Arizona. Samples were collected from both the metamorphic core and the Tertiary cover rocks. Normal and reversed directions obtained for the latter do not differ significantly from directions predicted for stable North America at that time. The direction of the remanence of the rocks from below the detachment zone does not correspond to any identifiable period. We suggest that the remanence was acquired during the uplift of the core and has been rotated by about 30°. Some possible interpretations are discussed.
