Abstract

In the brittle field, deformed areas are difficult to restore mainly because key markers are often missing: the exact amount of displacement along discontinuties and the component of rigid rotation can rarely be measured using purely structural techniques.

However, the main targets of structural field work in deformed areas are often more easily reached in brittle domains than in ductile ones.

  1. 1.

The orientation of small significant discontinuities created during a single deformation episode, and/or, the senses of motion along randomly distributed pre-existing discontinuities, allow us to measure the local orientation of strain axes.

  2. 2.

The distribution and association of significant small discontinuities allow us to estimate the strain ellipsoid type.

  3. 3.

The general pattern of discontinuities examined at the scale of the deformed system, the order of appearance of these discontinuities (progressive deformation) and the change in orientation of principal strain axes with time, are key data for assessing the strain regime.

  4. 4.

The spatial integration of local strain data allow us to construct strain trajectories, which are relevant to i) the possible rigid rotation of blocks and ii) the general question of displacement at the boundaries of deformed systems.

Different field exemples and results illustrate the above approach. Some of them are taken in orogenic belt forelands (compressive zones), whilst others concern stretched crustal material (extensional zones).
