Abstract
Before the introduction of monoclonal antibodies, immunocytochemical labelling of tumour cells in pleural and peritoneal fluid was achieved using antisera raised against carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)192 and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA)104. An antibody against mesothelial cells was also described233, and another anti-mesothelial antibody has been made more recently51. If monoclonal antibodies can be made with that specificity, many of the most difficult problems in relation to serous effusions will be solved.
