Abstract

This paper presents the results from a study into the corrosion characteristics of model carbon-fibre/pure aluminium MMC. These model MMC have been used to identity the fundamental characteristics which control the corrosion response of this type of material. The corrosion responses of these composites have been characterised by a number of electrochemical techniques including long-term immersion. potentiodynamic sweeps, and AC impedance measurements. Typical data is presented for all these techniques, and the characterisations derived from the different measurements are compared in the context of the overall corrosion resistance of these materials.
