Abstract
This brief chapter is a personal reflection on some of the aspects involved in attempting to reconcile simultaneously the objectives of concentration and selective purification of bioproducts. The review is written from a process engineering perspective, and it attempts to provide a context for the many papers in this volume addressing these problems, and also to identify problems and targets which are worthy of research and development.
