Abstract
We examine the effects of inertia upon the circular abrupt 4:1 contraction flow of a generalized Newtonian fluid, the extensional viscosity of which has been increased by a dependence upon the third as well as the second invariants of the rate of deformation tensor. It is shown that the combination of inertial and elongational effects leads to the development of a small but strong lip vortex which may envelop the stagnant corner vortex.
