Abstract
Circular cylindrical shells containing localised dent type damage are shown to develop high levels of local stress concentration. For a generalised analysis procedure, the dent damage is represented by means of a normal pressure applied to the perfect shell for analysis. For axially loaded cylinders having various end loading conditions, an even more convenient axisymmetric form of analysis procedure is presented; this is suitable for routine damage effect assessment. Predicted stress concentrations are used to provide a simplified calculation of the effects on fatigue life for components containing localised dent damage.
