Abstract

The fast and efficient isocratic separation of mono-and divalent cations on a polymer-coated silica material has been introduced by Schomburg and coworkers [1]. The separation takes place on a crosslinked layer of poly(butadiene-maleic acid) with weak organic acids as eluents. Ion chromatography with electronic background suppression employing this type of column has been used successfully in the analysis of water, foodstuffs and beverages [2]. The field of application of this column is growing fast. With acidified standard and sample solutions (pH = 3) the linear range of concentration is about three orders of magnitude.
