Abstract

The mechanical behavior of ion-nitrided and ion-carbonitrided surface layers of 400rNiMo has been studied by acoustic emission and SEM. It shows that the unidirectional tensile yield strength of materials can be raised by the above-montioned surface treatment. The plastic deformation of the surface layer occurs before the low yield point or after according to the difference of residual stress distribution. The formation of surface deformation streaks and their influence on the surface layer splitting are discussed.
