Surface Characterization and High-Temperature Adhesive Bonding of Carbon Fiber-Polyimide Matrix Composites

Abstract

Carbon fiber-polyimide matrix composites were surface pretreated in numerous ways. Changes in the surface chemistry of the pretreated composites were determined through the use of X-ray photoelectron speectroscopy (XPS). The effect of surface pretreatment on the wettability of the composite surfaces was studied using contact angle measurements. Pretreated composite surfaces were bonded with a high temperature adhesive in both the single lap shear and the wedge configurations. Both types of joints were placed in various environments to determine the effect of surface pretreatment on the strength and durability of these adhesively-bonded composites. After the samples debonded, the failed surfaces were examined again using XPS to determine the locus of failure.
