Design of a Very High Field Magnet for an SSC Dectector

Abstract

The feasibility of a very high field superconducting solenoidal magnet for high energy collider experiments at SSC is investigated. We present a design for a magnet that is 2 m in diameter, 2.5 m in length with a central field of 6 Tesla. The magnet coil has a multi-layer structure in which every layer is wound on its own aluminum bobbin. These bobbin-coil layers are shrink-fit together into a single coil. This structure withstands the strong magnetic pressure while keeping the coil plus cryostat thickness less than 0.5 nuclear interaction lengths thus minimizing its effect on the performance of hadron calorimeters located outside the coil. An evaluation of the mechanical and thermal properties of the coil is given.
