Formation and Application of Highly Oriented Semicrystalline Polymers

Abstract

The formation and morphology of highly oriented semicrystalline polymers is briefly discussed. It is shown that unusual composite materials can be prepared by laminating fibrillated films between isotropic films of polyethylene. One-polymer composites with high strength and toughness can also be prepared by laminating parallel arrays of ultra-high-strength polyethylene fibres between sheets of common-grade polyethylene in a heated press. The mechanical behaviour of these composite films can be compared to some natural composites (Broad-leaved plantain).
