Abstract

Later chapters in this book will discuss the origins of the fluid motions that occur within combustion chambers of spark-ignition engines, the fundamentals of the combustion process itself and some of the mathematical modelling of this process that has been carried out—all essentially looking at combustion from the inside. The aim of this chapter is to look at combustion from the outside; to take the position of the researcher or developer faced with trying to understand and develop the engine. It will try to illustrate some of the characteristics of the combustion process in spark-ignition engines and show how these may be measured. There is now a vast body of information on this subject: this chapter can only describe a selection which will illustrate the author’s views on the important features.
