Abstract

Quartz crystals were hydrothermally grown in KCl solutions in the range 350–500° C, and it was possible to produce large crystals after a few months. The best conditions to obtain sufficient growth rates were found to be: growth temperatures above 400°C and 10 wt% KCl solution. Striations were observed on the prism face and the relative growth rates were R > r. Furthermore, the solubility of quartz was measured in 2, 10, and 30 wt% KCl solutions in the range 400-440°C. It was found that the solubility obeyed the Van’t Hoff equation with a heat of solution of 7,600, 6,900, and 8,000 cal/mole, respectively, in 2, 10, and 30 wt% KCl solutions.
