Abstract
Haemodialysis is one of the most widely used treatments for patients with kidney failure. It is performed at home or in hospital. The part of the hospital which is used for dialysis may be called the renal unit, the dialysis unit, the artificial kidney unit or the haemodialysis unit. Generally a renal unit has about ten beds — often called dialysis stations. In some units and homes patients dialyse sitting in a chair. Usually a hospital dialysis station is used by at least two patients in any 24 hours.
