Abstract
Unfortunately not everyone treated with regular dialysis is able to work full-time. Some people are unable to find any employment. Fortunately the State provides a number of benefits which are available to dialysis and transplant patients. This short chapter is a general guide for patients in Great Britain. Every renal unit has a social worker who is able to advise regarding benefits and has a much wider role which includes discussion of, and help with, difficult or delicate matters. A sound knowledge of State benefits, to whom they apply, and how to claim them is part of a social worker’s job in helping to reduce stress and anxiety over the very different life that people experience on dialysis. As well as social workers based in the hospital, each local authority has a Social Service department to provide advice and support to people in the local community. Finally, all local authorities have Citizens’ Advice Bureaux with staff expert in advising and helping people.
