Abstract
The basic aims of medical care are as old as time itself, namely:
-
to cure sometimes
-
to relieve often
-
to comfort always
Now that many diseases are curable and controllable, the emphasis of care is shifting towards:
-
prevention of disease
-
promotion of health
These objectives are now enshrined in the ‘new general practice’ and are included in the White Paper and New Contract for general practice of 1989.
