The Transplantation and Replacement of Thoracic Organs

Abstract

Following the introduction of cyclosporine into the immunosuppressive armamentarium in 1980, successful heart—lung transplantation has been reported1. The indications for the operation range from increased pulmonary vascular resistance, either primary idiopathic or as a consequence of cardiac disease, to the effects of disturbances in the lung parenchyma in emphysema and cystic fibrosis2 (Chapter 34).
