Prior to 1967, patients with end-stage cardiac disease had little hope for the future. With the development of heart transplantation and the introduction of cyclosporine, patients who otherwise may not have survived have had an opportunity to extend and improve the quality of their lives. Survival statistics alone, however, do not reflect the challenges patients undergoing cardiac transplantation must face. Such patients must undergo what is ironically a lifethreatening, but at the same time life-saving, procedure1.
