Abstract

The implantation of a natural auxiliary heart using the technique of heterotopic heart transplantation (HHT) may be on a permanent basis, or may occasionally be temporary as a means of support whilst recovery of the patient’s own heart is awaited or a more definitive procedure is planned (as will be outlined later). Considerable clinical experience has now been amassed with auxiliary hearts implanted on a permanent basis1; all such hearts have to date been allografts. Clinical experience of temporary support by an auxiliary heart has been small, and it would seem that it is in this area of transplantation that xenografts may play a future role.
