Abstract
In the Knowledge Engineering Workbench (developed in the Acknowledge project Esprit — 2576) we have replaced the traditional single knowledge base of a development tool for knowledge based system by a Common Information Repository (CIR) containing all the knowledge and information relevant for the construction of the target knowledge based system. The CIR concept represents a significant improvement of a knowledge based system development tool and enables the incorporation of new functionality; being a central pool for integration of knowledge from different knowledge acquisition tools, being a source for giving active advice and guidance in the knowledge engineering process and providing project management facilities. The Common Information Repository includes the final integrated knowledge base, which of course is the main part of the repository, but all kinds of elicited knowledge and project management information are also stored in different parts of the repository.
