Summary

The essence of this paper are six examples of varying complexity and involving different kinds of mathematical techniques which all show the usefulness of mathematics in industry. They also show that this usefulness depends strongly on the degree to which the problems are explicitely solved and on how strongly the solutions contribute to the development and marketing of new products.
