Extragalactic Interacting Binaries

  • Chapter
Active Close Binaries

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 319))

Abstract

The effort to discover extragalactic (EG) analogues of galactic interacting binaries is summarized. At present, not all types of close binaries are known outside the Milky Way. The older photographic surveys emphasized discovery of MS-or-brighter binaries and modern ones have concentrated on supernova searches. EG novae continue to be discovered accidentally. Very few light and velocity curves of non-degenerate binaries are presently available. With modern detecting capability most recognized limitations can be overcome technologically but telescope time will probably continue to limit knowledge for the foreseeable future. There is suggested a number of reasons for increasing concentration on EG binaries.
