Abstract

We analyzed periodic astrophysical sources as gravitational continuous waves emitters. Particular attention received binaries with highly eccentric orbits and cataclysmic variables either computing their dimensionless strain amplitude spectra or trying to establish if indirect evidence of Gravitational radiation could be detected from observations of their period variations. The trials were unsuccessfully, but this point must be carefully checked by further studies. From this analysis we conclude that interesting astrophysical sources for detection at low frequencies (v > 10Hz) are pulsars. A scenario of ground based planned experiments of direct detection by large base two wave interferometric gravitational wave antennas is also given. Particular attention was given to the presentation of the italo-french project VIRGO to implement such type of GW antenna at very low frequencies.
