Abstract
In embarking on the present NATO Advanced Study Institute on Active Close Binaries it is proper for us to define the first scope of its subject and the range of its concern. This can be done in more than one way; but perhaps the simplest and most general approach to our task is to consider the occurrence of transient evolutionary phenomena in close binary systems, taking place on the time-scale of our observations, generally faster than those which would unroll if the stars were single. And if we adopt this statement as our working definition, the task facing us in our discussion will be to account for the observed facts in terms of theories governing stellar physics, and to document our conclusions — tentative as they may be — by observations which are either already available, or could be secured by existing means.
