The Particles Around Mass-Losing Carbon Stars

Mass losing carbon stars are responsible for about half of the mass lost by intermediate mass stars in the solar neighborhood. These stars typically have dust to gas ratios by mass near 5 10-3; most of the matter heavier than helium is apparently contained within solid grains. The relative amounts of large grains (>10-6 cm) and small particles in these outflows is not yet reliably known and may vary from star to star.
