Extragalactic Extinction: The Optical Data for the Early-Type Galaxy NGC 2534

Abstract

The dust lane of the early-type galaxy NGC 2534 is used in order to obtain extinction data for the extragalactic dust. In fact, since there are many morphological and dynamical evidences that dust lanes are acquired from outside (e.g.: Bertola F., Galletta G. & Zeilinger W.W., 1985, Ap.J.,292, L51; Bertola F. & Bettoni D., 1988, Ap.J., 329, 102; Bertola F., Galletta G., Kotanyi C. & Zeilinger W.W., 1988, M.N.R.A.S., 234, 733; Bertola F., Buson L.M. & Zeilinger W.W., 1988, Nature, 335, 705), these structures become the best laboratory to test the physical properties of the extragalactic dust.
