Observations of the Cold Dust and Gas in Centaurus A: Probing an Extragalactic ISM

Abstract

We present SEST molecular line and IRAS CPC far-IR measurements of the cold interstellar gas and dust in NGC 5128 (Centauras A). These measurements indicate that the bulk of the gas is confined to the optical dust lane but that the far-IR emission has a significantly greater scale height. We conclude from a comparison of these two data sets that there is a substantial amount of cool dust present in Centauras A which is not intimately associated with star formation.
